The Lakshmi Devi Temple at Doddagaddavalli is an exceptionally rare chatuskuta (four-shrine) Hoysala complex situated by a scenic village lake. Built early in the reign of Vishnuvardhana, it is one of the earliest surviving Hoysala monuments and the only known four-towered Hoysala shrine dedicated principally to Goddess Mahalakshmi.

Chronicle & Epigraphy

Historical Foundations of Lakshmi Devi Temple

Erected in 1114 CE by the wealthy merchant Kallahana Rahuta and his wife Sahaja Devi with the royal blessing of King Vishnuvardhana, Doddagaddavalli represents the creative dawn of mature Hoysala stone architecture. The temple includes shrines dedicated to Lakshmi, Shiva (Bhairava/Linga), Vishnu, and an astonishingly fearsome life-size image of eight-armed dancing Kali. Enclosed within an authentic stone courtyard with miniature corner shrines, it remains an extraordinary monument protected by the ASI.
