Chronicle & Epigraphy

Historical Foundations of Veera Narayana Temple

Constructed in approximately 1200 CE by the Hoysala ruler King Veera Ballala II, Belavadi (historically referenced as Ekachakranagara of the Mahabharata) was an important strategic town. The temple developed in two distinct building phases, uniting the original older western shrine with the grand two-shrine transverse wing. The central Venugopala image is celebrated by art historians as one of the finest stone sculptures in Indian art. It is a centrally protected national monument managed by the ASI.
